ad·dic·tion

uh-dik-shunNounDefinition: the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma.
Origin: Traced to Roman law, under which addiction was a ''formal giving over by sentence of court; hence, a dedication of a person to a master.''  This notion of relinquishment of control by the addicted person is the central feature of many lay and professional definitions.
